Maaaaaaannn hold up!  Two of my best friends from  Texas are coming to visit me in NY tomorrow and I’m so CRUNK, mane!  In celebration, I’m bumping some good ole’ (albeit ignorant as hell) TX hip-hop——-I’m talking about that Swishahouse, “f” action, screwed and chopped ish.  That Paul Wall, UGK, Slim Thug, Lil Keke, Boss Hogg Outlawz ish.

If you’re not from Texas, you probably don’t understand…and probably never will.

Allllllllllllready mane!

I can recall the exact moment that my pre-teen love affair with Mariah Carey began: at the 20 second mark of this video.

This is hands down my favorite video by Mariah.  I love everything about this joint—-the concept, the simple choreography, the vocal runs, the characteristically 90s tomfoolery by the Bad Boy crew…the wet suit.  This is the remix video, but the original video goes just as hard

This song comes from the Butterfly album, and although her other albums had great singles, I DARE someone to argue that Butterfly isn’t her best album to date.

This video brings back SO many memories of me and my hometown crew jammin’.

Enjoy,

I love books.  They are on of my biggest passions and are my biggest extravagance.  Even though I work around books all day long, I can still go into a Barnes and Noble and get lost for hours, just roaming the shelves.  I am amassing quite a collection of all types of books, and my Vanity Fair “Oscar Night” coffee table book is def one of my favorites.  I was at work one day, and this treasure (and I mean that in every sense of the word—the book costs $75) was sitting on one of our free book shelves.  Now you KNOW I couldn’t pass this one up!  With many of us still in a post Slumdogs, (oops, I mean post Oscars) hangover, I thought you might enjoy some of these amazing photos from this great book as much as I do.  Let me know what you think.

Enjoy,

I remember the first time I heard this song.  I was in the 3rd grade and was at a classmate’s birthday party at a roller rink. The normal light pop/R&B roller rink songs had been playing, so when “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana started blaring out of the speakers, it was like a jolt of electricity.  I didn’t know what in the HELL they were saying (and really only learned a few years ago), but from the very beginning of the song when Kurt Cobain was strumming the main riff on his guitar, I was hooked.  The energy of this song is incredible, and whenever I need to get hype  (for a workout, job interview, presentation, date, lol) this is one of the songs that gets heavy rotation on my iPod.

Y’all don’t know nothin’ about this. 🙂

In the spirit of “Teen Spirit”,

About a year ago, I had the opportunity to meet and work with Janelle Monae and her fellow Wondaland Arts Society members Deep Cotton for an event at Morehouse.  I had gotten in to Janelle’s music before then, but after witnessing her graciousness and talent first hand, I was immediately a lifetime fan.

This song, “Many Moons” speaks to me on so many levels, and the short film represents a level of artistry that is rare these days.  Get into the video above and for more info  visit http://www.deepcottononline.com and http://www.jmonae.com/

Jon B = The Most Slept-On R&B Artist EVER.

One-hit-wonder? Maybe. But you can’t deny his vocal talent…or the fact that over a decade after it’s release, you’re still gettin’ it in to this song. 😉

Enjoy,
